The Central Vipers and Eastern Hornbills are set to make history when they officially launch the inaugural SGNRL Championship at Tanglin Rugby Club’s Kampong Java Fields this Saturday.
The match represents far more than just the chance to claim competition points. It is the result of months of tireless effort by many individuals establishing the code, all coming to fruition in Singapore’s first-ever domestic rugby league season.
Beyond club pride and early competition standings, the campaign will also offer local players a vital platform to showcase their skills as they push for selection in the Singapore Memerang squad ahead of their end-of-season international fixtures.
“There has been an incredible amount of work behind the scenes to get to this point, and to finally see our first domestic competition kick off is a massive milestone for rugby league in Singapore,” said Sam Nason, Head of the SGNRL Championship.
“Both the Vipers and Hornbills are eager to get out there and write the first chapter of this new competition. The energy across the entire community is electric, and we can’t wait for Saturday.”
Kicking off at 2:00 PM local time, both sides will need to contend with the Singapore heat and a short pre-season as they battle for a crucial early victory in the compact six-round season.
Representing the central region, the Vipers boast an impressive line-up reinforced by national team experience. Memerang representatives Fynn Postlethwaite and Kayden Chia both bring high-level composure to the squad following their involvement in last year’s Asian Championship, with Postlethwaite also featuring in Singapore’s recent international tour to Vanuatu.
While the Hornbills do not feature any current Memerang representatives, they enter the clash with a battle-hardened squad drawn from the rich rugby community across Singapore’s eastern corridor, hungry to claim the historic first victory.
The SGNRL Championship features three foundation clubs playing each other twice in a home-and-away format, leading up to a high-stakes Grand Final on September 19.
