The inaugural SGNRL Championship officially kicked off in memorable fashion with a fast, flowing, and high-scoring match as the Eastern Hornbills secured a 72–48 victory over the Central Vipers at TRC Kampong Java Field.
In a landmark moment for the competition, the Hornbills collected the inaugural SGNRL Championship’s first-ever competition points after outlasting the Vipers in a relentless offensive battle, expertly officiated by referees Sam and Brent.
Battling warm, humid conditions and 32-degree heat, the Hornbills’ depth proved to be the decisive factor. Boasting a full bench, the Hornbills maintained a strong tempo throughout, crossing the line for an impressive 14 tries alongside 8 goals.
The Hornbills’ attack was spearheaded by hat-trick performances from Nicholas Rimmer, Ronan Brar, and Takahito Saigo, with additional tries from Jordan, Matt, Lilou, David, and Max rounding out the effort.
Despite the deficit, the Central Vipers mounted a strong effort, running in 9 tries and 6 goals. Dane Chisholm was a standout for the Vipers, crossing for four tries, while Liam Yau bagged a double and kicked 6 goals from 9 attempts. Donavan and Flynn also crossed the line for the Vipers, but the team ultimately succumbed to the grueling heat and the Hornbills’ bench advantage late in the match.
Matt Williams was named the Outback Butchery Player of the Match for a standout performance that included crossing the line for one of the Hornbills’ 14 tries.
The SGNRL extends its sincere gratitude to match officials, as well as valued partners Tadcasters Hospitality, Singapore Animal Rehabilitation, Outback Butchery, and Kendall Court, whose support has been instrumental in making the inaugural Championship possible.
The Eastern Hornbills will aim to build on their opening-round momentum when they return to action in Round 2 on Saturday, August 15. They will face off against the Wanderers Tigers at TRC Kampong Java Field.
