The Singapore National Rugby League (SGNRL) has warmly received the recent comments from Perth Bears CEO, Anthony De Ceglie, regarding his vision to host NRL premiership matches in Singapore.
Following the Perth Bears’ official confirmation as the NRL’s 18th franchise—set to enter the competition in 2027, De Ceglie has highlighted in an interview with CityAM, that Singapore as a primary target for the club’s international expansion.
Describing the city-state as an “economic Asian powerhouse,” the Bears’ leadership sees Singapore as the “Perth version of Las Vegas,” citing the favourable time zone and world-class infrastructure as key drivers for the move.
A Shared Vision for Global Growth
The SGNRL views this ambition as a perfect alignment with its own goals to elevate the profile of rugby league in Southeast Asia. Having previously expressed strong support for the NRL’s “Global Round” concept, the SGNRL believes the addition of a Perth-based team provides the most logical and sustainable bridge for the sport into Asia.
Why Singapore is the Ideal Stage
The Bears’ CEO noted that playing in Singapore would allow the NRL to capitalise on a time zone that serves both the Australian East Coast and the growing Asian market. For the SGNRL, the benefits are clear:
- The “Gateway” Factor: As one of the world’s most connected travel hubs, Singapore is the ideal meeting point for traveling Perth fans and the wider international rugby league community.
- World-Class Infrastructure: The 55,000-seat National Stadium stands ready to host a “Perth in Singapore” blockbuster, offering fans and players a premier sporting experience.
- A Growing Fan Base: With over 250,000 identified NRL fans in the region and consistent broadcast coverage on Premier Sports Asia, the appetite for live, high-stakes rugby league has never been higher.
Building for the Future
The SGNRL remains committed to engaging with the ARL Commission and the Perth Bears to try to bring NRL to Singapore.
