The Singapore National Rugby League (SGNRL) is proud to announce that the Women’s National Team will henceforth be known as the Sunbirds.

The moniker was chosen for its deep cultural resonance and symbolic power, as the Sunbird is widely regarded as the unofficial national bird of Singapore. The Sunbirds, much like the athletes they represent, embody agility, resilience, and a vibrant spirit.

Renowned for their energy and ability to thrive in the heat of the tropics, these birds perfectly mirror the characteristics of our players as they compete on the international stage. The introduction of the Sunbirds marks a significant milestone in the evolution of the sport within the Lion City, providing a distinct identity for our elite female athletes to carry with pride.

The Sunbirds now take their place alongside the Memerang, our Men’s National Team, as the two senior representative pillars of the Singapore Rugby League. This alignment ensures a unified front for Singaporean rugby league, with both teams representing the pinnacle of domestic talent and the ambition of our sporting community. By establishing a unique identity for the women’s side, the SGNRL reinforces its commitment to gender equality and the continued growth of the women’s game.

Looking toward the future, the SGNRL has set a clear and ambitious mandate for this squad. It is our primary objective to establish the Sunbirds as the premier Women’s national team in Asia.
