The Singapore Rugby League has enthusiastically welcomed news that the National Rugby League (NRL) is considering a groundbreaking “Global Round,” as recently reported by Fox Sports Australia.
The SRL will seek to engage with the NRL in the view of putting forward Singapore as a candidate to host one of the marquee fixtures, highlighting the nation’s world-class infrastructure, strategic location, and rapidly expanding fan base.
The NRL’s Global Round concept, which aims to take multiple premiership games outside of Australia and New Zealand, is a bold move to internationalise the sport, following the immense success of the opening round in Las Vegas.
Proven Fan Base and Media Reach
Whilst the Singapore Rugby League is new to the market, the NRL is already well-supported in the country. The competition already enjoys strong coverage on Premier Sports Asia with a minimum of three matches covered each week, plus Origin and Finals, whilst Watch NRL subscriptions continues to grow.
Crucially, digital engagement figures show that more than 250,000 people have identified as NRL or NRL club fans across Social Media across the region, demonstrating a significant, established, and accessible audience base ready to purchase tickets and merchandise.
World-Class Venue and Accessibility
Singapore boasts the state-of-the-art National Stadium, a multi-purpose venue with a capacity of 55,000. This modern facility is equipped to host major international sporting events and provides a premium experience for players and fans.
Furthermore, Singapore’s Changi Airport is one of the world’s most connected hubs. All major Rugby League markets (including Australia, New Zealand) have direct flights to Singapore, making it one of the most accessible locations for travelling fans.
Logistical and Broadcasting Advantage
The time difference between Singapore and Australia’s Eastern Seaboard (AEST/AEDT) is a highly favourable three hours. This minor time gap provides ample flexibility for broadcasters, allowing for prime-time viewing in Australia while offering a convenient kick-off time for local Singaporean fans, maximising the global audience.
The Singapore Rugby League looks forward to engaging with the ARL Commission to demonstrate Singapore’s readiness to deliver a successful and memorable fixture for the Global Round.
